Holiday Season - Stay safe - Do NOT be a victim

With this very busy season, please be aware of your surroundings - always. Lock it up or lose it should be your motto.

For instance, when you’re in a store checking out, don’t flash what you have in your wallet openly so peering eyes can see that you’re flush with cash and credit cards.

Be aware as you leave businesses of who might be watching or following you. If you’re uncomfortable, go back inside and ask for an escort to your car. Leave buildings with your keys in hand - not talking on the phone - ready to get into your vehicle and leave. If you have packages to load in your car, keep your purse on you, not on your front seat, while you are loading.

Never leave your unlocked car unattended - even to push your grocery cart to a nearby rack. That’s just enough time for your car to be stolen.

Don’t sit in your car talking on the phone without locking your car.

Once you are headed home, be well aware of cars that COULD be following you - especially with dark tinted windows. If you are suspicious do NOT lead them straight to your house. If necessary, drive to a well-lit area and call the police at 893-7780 telling them of your suspicion. They will be happy to come to check it out.

Once home, it’s best to drive into your garage and close the door before you start unloading packages. If that is not possible, certainly take your purse and keys inside FIRST before you start unloading but don’t leave the car unlocked if it isn’t secured in your garage. (And do you know if you have a valet key in your glove compartment?)

The best advice is to always be aware of your surroundings. Especially at this time of year with lots on our minds, it’s easy to let our guard down. DON’T DO IT! Stay aware and alert and lead by example.

Remember – “lock it up or lose it” should be your new motto.

LOCK UP. PLEASE DON’T BE A VICTIM!
